28 held after clash between supporters of 2 Sarpanch

Twenty-eight people were arrested today for their alleged involvement in a clash between the supporters of two sarpanch candidates for the ensuing Panchayat elections at Krushnachhai in Odisha's Ganjam district, the police said.

The clash took place yesterday evening after an heated argument between the supporters of the sarpanch aspirants during filing of nomination papers from Krushanchhai gram panchayat in Sheragada block, they said.

At least six persons from both groups had sustained minor injuries in the pre-poll clash. They were taken to a hospital at Sheragada and most of them were discharged after treatment, they said.

"We have arrested 28 persons from both groups. We are also searching for other people involved in the group clash," Inspector In charge of Sheragada police station, Biswa Ranjan Nayak, said.
 

The situation in the village was under control now and police force has been deployed to maintain law and order situation, he said.
