All three candidates, who had filed their nominations for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, remained on course for the March 21 contest on the last day of withdrawal of candidature today.

The contestants in the fray are Ripun Bora and Ranee Narah of Congress and businessman Mahavir Prasad Jain as an Independent candidate, an Assembly spokesperson said.

The candidates had filed their nomination papers on March 11 for the Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant next month following the scheduled retirement of two Congress members, Naznin Faruque and Pankaj Bora on April 2 next.

Bora is Congress' first preference candidate while Narah the second for the March 21 polls.

The Congress currently has 69 MLAs in the 126-member House with nine of its former members, who joined the BJP last year, being disqualified and another resigned after joining the saffron party.
