Police burst three tear gas shells to quell the mob which brickbatted the personnel as they tried to ensure peaceful counting of the ballots, a senior police officer said.

The injured policemen were referred to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital from Manteswar Health Centre as their condition was stated to be serious, the officer said.

Twenty persons were later rounded up in connection with the incident as police raided the area, the officer said.

While Trinamool Congress alleged CPI(M) cadre instigated the violence as the counting progressed fearing loss of control over the panchayat, the Marxists said police high-handedness aggravated the situation.

Altogether 400 villagers cast ballots for nine seats of the cooperative.
