Three Bihar Police jawans were among four persons killed today in a road accident in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

The three police personnel -- Havildar Manager Singh and Constables Sujit Kumar Paswan and Mohd Kamal -- were on election duty for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, CEO Ajay V Nayak said.

The identity of the fourth person, a native of Andhra Pradesh, is yet to be ascertained, Nayak added.

The police personnel were returning to Patna after having deposited faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) at the Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) workshop in Bangalore for repairs.

The vehicle which they had boarded was hit by a container lorry travelling at high speed.

"It's a tragic incident. We sympathise with the family members of the deceased personnel. Since they were on election duty, we have passed necessary instructions for the release of compensation as fixed by Election Commission," said Nayak.

Meanwhile, Patna District Magistrate N Saravana Kumar is in touch with the Nellore district administration to arrange for the bodies to be brought back by flight.

"We have arranged for the bodies to be brought back by a GoAir flight to Patna tomorrow. They are expected to land here by 1.30 P.M." said Kumar.
