Three policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), were today suspended for allegedly showing apathy and not coming to the rescue of an injured man who subsequently died in absence of timely medical aid.

"An ASI, a head constable and constable posted at Vijay Nagar Police Station have been suspended and a departmental enquiry started against them," Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Santosh Kumar Singh told PTI.

He said one Saurabh Suryavanshi, a resident of Vijay Nagar, sustained injuries in a road accident while returning home in the intervening night of December 31- January 1 after taking part in the New Year celebrations.

A group of policemen spotted the 22-year-old in an injured condition on the roadside, but they did not inform his family members about his condition, the DIG said.

Suryavanshi was found dead in Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital's premises yesterday.

According to Suryavanshi's family members, the policemen did not take him to the government-run hospital, an inaction which proved costly.

The law enforcers also did not bother to later find out his condition or informed his family members, they alleged.

The charges levelled by the Suryavanshi's family are being looked into, Singh said, adding a probe is also on to find out why the deceased didn't get medical attention at the hospital and the circumstances which led to his death.
