Three persons were killed and two others injured as the wires of an overhead crane snapped at the under construction Bagha irrigation project site in Boudh district today, Odisha Labour minister Prafulla Mallik said.
While two persons died on the spot, another died in hospital. Two others were admitted to Sunepur Hospital and later shifted to the Medical College Hospital at Burla, the minister said.
The sluice gates of the under construction project at Sagada broke after the wires supporting the overloaded crane snapped and it overturned and hit the gates, the minister said.

The deceased have been identified as Bhima Muduli, Ramadas Muduli and Tulu Kera of Auliguma in Nabarangpur district.
The minister said he has also asked the local labour officer to inquire into the matter.
Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000, besides free treatment, for the injured.
Pataik also asked the chief engineer (Mechanical) of Water Resources department to investigate the matter and submit report within three days.
