Punjab police today arrested three farmers for their alleged involvement in a drug smuggling racket in connivance with Pakistan-based operators.

Acting on a tip-off, the police carried out raids at village Madhre and arrested three persons, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Garg said.

However, their fourth accomplice and the main supplier, managed to flee, he said.

The police also recovered 115 grams of heroin from the suspects.

All these farmers have agriculture land across the border fencing and were involved in illegal drug peddling for the last several months, police said.

"They used to conceal the heroin consignment beneath their tractor and had managed to smuggle around 25 packets of heroin inside the Indian territory within last few months," Garg said, adding a case under sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of NDPS Act has been lodged at Ferozepur Sadar police station.
