Three persons, including two assistant managers of a travel company, were arrested for allegedly misappropriating foreign currencies worth around Rs 2.2 crore of the firm under the grab of a sham robbery, police said today.

According to a complaint by Thomas Cook (India) Limited general manager Ankit Gupta, the firm's assistant manager Sumit Kumar (30) was given Rs 2,22,78,683 in foreign currencies at the firm's IGI branch yesterday to deposit it at its Connaught Place branch, said DCP Jatin Narwal.

His phone was switched off and after several hours he called from Noida informing that the money was robbed of him near Shivaji Metro station, the officer said.

A case was registered at Connaught Place Police Station and Sumit was thoroughly questioned and taken to all the places he claimed to have gone. An analysis of his call record did not match with the sequence of the incident he reported, Narwal said.

During interrogation, Sumit admitted that the robbery story was made up to misappropriate the foreign currencies, he claimed.

The accused revealed that after collecting the foreign currencies he reached Shivaji Stadium Metro station and met Rohit Kumar (27), an assistant manager at the same company, and his elder brother Rahul who were waiting for him in a car, the officer said.

After handing over the money to Rohit and Rahul, he went to Noida from where he contacted his office to report the fake robbery, Narwal said, adding all the three accused were arrested yesterday for criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of the amount.
