Three children were hospitalised as they fell sick after consuming a popular mango-flavour drink in Kalapathar area here, police said.

A case has been registered against the shop owner from whose outlet the mango drink was purchased, they said.

Three boys, all siblings aged below five, complained of vomiting and loose motions last night after consuming the fruit drink that was purchased from a shop. They were admitted to a nearby hospital, Kalapathar police station Sub-Inspector G Sravan Kumar said, based on a complaint lodged by the father of the kids.

Following the complaint, police raided the shop and its adjacent godown and seized a stock of the mango-flavoured drink. Some of the samples have been sent to FSL and Food department to verify if it was adulterated, Kumar told PTI.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered against the shop owner - Hameenuddin - under IPC sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink) and 420 (cheating), the SI said.

The police officer also said they were investigating if there was any adulteration of the fruit drink.

"Though the stock carries manufacturing date of June and has an expiry of six months...Based on the report from the FSL and Food department we will take further action ... The shop owner has also been questioned," he said.

Doctors treating the children said the boys, who were admitted in ICU, had complained of severe vomiting and loose motions and after being given treatment their condition is now stable.

"We are monitoring...Their condition is stable...But we have to keep them under observation for next 48 hours," one of the doctors at the private hospital said.

Further probe in the matter is on.
