3 killed, 5 injured as tanker rams into road side shops

Three persons were killed and five others injured when a gas tanker rammed into road side shops at a major crossing in Nadia district today, police said.

The accident occurred at Bara Jaguli crossing under Haringhata police station about 7 AM when the driver of the tanker, belonging to a nationalised company, lost control over the vehicle.

SDPO, Kalyani, Chandrasekhar Bardhan, said the tanker rammed into an eatery, a tea stall and a public toilet at the side of the National Highway 34 injuring eight persons.

When taken to hospital, three of them were declared brought dead, he said, adding the other five were released after first aid.
 

The deceased were identified as tea stall owner Nayan Sarkar (58), labourer Shankar Bag (43) and Gour Chandra Chatterjee (51), care taker of a lodge in Howrah. All the three were residents of Nadia.

The police arrested the driver of the tanker.

A section of the local people said poor condition of the National Highway was responsible for the accident.
