3 killed in elephant attacks

Pramila Ekka (35) and her son Rohit (3) died when a herd of pachyderms turned on their village, Bijadihi, under Kinjrikela police station in Sundargarh district in the wee hours, they said.

A herd of about 15 elephants struck when the villagers were asleep.

The family members of the victims woke up as they heard noise and tried to escape. However, the mother who was carrying her three-year old child, fell in front and both were trampled to death by the elephants.

The forest department gave Rs 20,000 for cremation of the deceased, A Behera, DFO Sundergarh, said, adding, "the family has been provided with the cremation expenses and later it would receive Rs 2 lakh each for the death of the woman and the child."

 

In another incident in Cuttack district, a man was attacked and killed by a wild elephant near Kusapangi on Munduli road on Banki area, police said.
