Three members of a family, accused of abetting the suicide of an elderly Akali Dal leader, were today sent to judicial custody after the expiry of their one-day police remand.

The accused -- Didar Singh, his wife Kulwant Kaur and son Gurwinder Singh, all residents of Manawali village -- have been booked under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC in connection with the suicide of SAD leader Buta Singh (63).

Didar Singh's another son, Parminder Singh, has also been booked, but was evading arrest, police said.

They have been booked on the basis of a suicide note left behind by Buta, SAD's Phagwara rural block vice-president and 'Nambardar' (village head) of Manawali, who had committed suicide on May 9 by consuming poison.

In the suicide note, Buta Singh had alleged that he had loaned out about Rs 15 lakh to the family of Didar Singh, but instead of returning the money, they had been threatening him.
