3 of family get 10-year jail term in dowry death case

A court here today sentenced three members of a family to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for murdering a woman over dowry demands in Vaishali district of Bihar in 2012.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Kanhaiya Ram held the three guilty and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the convicts.

According to the prosecution, Soni Devi was killed by her in-laws on June 13, 2012 at Mukundpur Gopinath village, under the Jandaha police station of Vaishali district.

The woman was killed by her in-laws for her family's failure to fulfil their demand for a four-wheeler as dowry, as per the prosecution.
 

The deceased's mother had lodged an FIR at the Jandaha police station in this regard.

Those sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment were the deceased woman's grandfather-in-law, Rameshwar Singh, father- in-law Krishna Singh and brother-in-law Basuki.

The police have declared the deceased's husband and sister-in-law as absconders.
