Three policemen have been killed and five others injured after gunmen ambushed their convoy in Egypt's capital city of Cairo, the government said.

The gunmen who came in two vehicles approached a moving security patrol while passing through Mohamed Zaki Square in el-Waha road near the ring road in Nasr city, Cairo, a statement by the Interior Ministry said.

The gunmen opened fire on them killing three policemen and injuring five others.

The security forces also exchanged fire with the gunmen. They are currently tracing the two vehicles to arrest the attackers, the statement said.

Different parts of Egypt have witnessed many terrorists attacks since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks, mainly targeting police and military, increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.
