3 semifinalists spotted

Punjab in the men's wing and Chhattisgarh and Telangana women booked their semi-final berths in the 67th senior national basketball championship here today.

In a quarter final match, Punjab defeated Indian Railways 101-83.

For the winners, Talwinder Jit Singh Sahi and Rajveer Singh top-scored with 27 points each while Arshpreet Bhullar (22) and Gurvinder Singh (20) too did well.

For Railways, Gagandeep Singh (25) Himanshu Sharma (20) and Vijender Kumar (13) were the main scorers.

Punjab trailed Railways in the first quarter (21-23) but rallied and led in the subsequent quarters (29-20, 20-18, 31-22) before romping home.

In the women's quarterfinals, Chhattisgarh outplayed Delhi 99-67 while Telangana overcame Tamil Nadu 81-70.
 

Chhattisgarh's Poonam Chaturvedi came up with a sterling performance doing the bulk of the scoring at 60 and was followed by Sharanjeet Kaur (9).

For the losers, Raspreet Sidhu (27) Sushanthika (23) and Vinti (12) sparkled.

In the Telangana-Tamil Nadu match, R Ramya (34) and M Gayatri (24) were the chief scorers for the winners. For Tamil Nadu R Varshanandhini (29), V Srividhya and K K Sruthi (11 each) put up a strong show.

In the men's pre-quarter finals, Rajasthan and Haryana sailed into the next stage with victories against Gujarat and Odisha respectively.

Rajasthan (Sharad Dadhich 25, Vinod Kumar 22, Bharatdeep Singh 11) beat Gujarat (Shafiq Shaikh 19) Harpal Sinh 12 Indervijaysinh Gohil 9) 83-64 (27-14, 18-13, 17-21, 21-16).

Haryana (Vikas Kumar 19, Pardeep Chauhan 17) beat Odisha (Ashok Kumar Nayak 21, Sahid Khan 12) 73-63 (18-20, 21-24, 22-8, 12-11).

Earlier in the day, Madhya Pradesh women's team qualified for the quarterfinals with a tight win against Rajasthan (77-74).

In a close finish Karnataka women fell to a spirited Maharashtra 61-62.
