A local court has sentenced three persons from Vasai here to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with a fatal attack on a youth in 2014.

District Judge S J Bharuka yesterday awarded the sentence to accused Danish Ansari (23), Masoom Khan (24) and Riyaz Khan (23) after they found guilty under section 304 (II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000.

The court acquitted three other accused, giving them the benefit of doubt.

The prosecution examined all eight witnesses, including the eye witnesses.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Ujwala Moholkar told the court that the victim, Sandesh Yeram, aged around 25, was assaulted by a group of men armed with sticks on March 16, 2014, in the wee hours.

"The accused beat Sandesh severely by tying him to an electric pole and also stripped him. They later fled. The motive behind the attack was said to be previous animosity between the victim and the accused," the APP said.

Before fleeing the crime site, the accused threatened the locals present there not to report the matter to police, else they would also face similar consequence.
