:A retired Inspector has been sentenced to three years Rigorous Imprisonment by a special court for taking Rs 4,000 as bribe from a weaver in September 2012 while in service to release his moped, taken in after an accident.

Bhoopal was also slapped with a fine of Rs 25,000 by the Special Court District Judge V Mohan yesterday.

The prosecution case was that Bhoopalan, who was Inspector at Aataiyampatti in the district, had taken in the moped of a weaver Thirumuguran on September 3 2012 after it rammed the cycle of a schoolboy, damaging it.

Despite the weaver's pleas to release the moped soon as he had to ride some distance to work, Bhooplan demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe and later scaled it down to Rs 4,000 as Thirumurugan said it would be difficult to pay it.

The weaver then preferred a complaint, following which a trap was laid and Bhoopalan was caught while the money was handed over.
