Thirty gharials from Madhya Pradesh would be translocated to Sutlej and Beas rivers in Punjab, an official said.

There were about 1,000 gharials (fish-eating crocodiles) in the Chambal river's protected area spread over an area of 435 kms, P P Tetre, an officer at Chambal Gharial Breeding Centre said.

He said they had 121 gharials below three years of age at their closed breeding centre in Devri.

"Of them, we have already put 91 in Chambal river. The rest 30 will be sent to Punjab," he said.

Punjab will become the second home for gharials after Madhya Pradesh in India, Charan Singh, an officer at the northern state's Hariker sanctuary, said.

A team from Punjab will visit MP's Devri to transport them, he added.
