30 held for smuggling gold worth Rs 3 cr at airport

Thirty persons were today detained at IGI airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 3 crore by hiding it in their rectum.

Acting on an input, officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Air Intelligence Unit of customs in a joint operation intercepted 30 passengers belonging to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other places after their arrival here from Singapore, official sources said.

After examination of their baggage, nothing objectionable was found. However, in their personal check, officials found gold hidden in their rectum, they said.

Each of them was carrying 400 grammes of gold. The total quantity of gold was about 12 kgs, worth about Rs three crore, the sources said.
 

The passengers were detained for questioning at the airport, they said, adding that further investigation is on.
