Delhi Transport Corporation will soon add 300 more drivers to its strength in a bid to increase frequency of its services on several routes.

At present there are nearly 5,300 buses plying in Delhi. The corporation has as many as 13,136 drivers, including 9,003 permanent staffers. There are 6,668 conductors on permanent basis while 7,749 are working with DTC on contract, a senior DTC official said.

"DTC will soon rope in 300 more drivers following which the waiting time for buses will be less on several routes. These drivers will run buses on routes where ridership is high," the senior official said.

The official said that 300 drivers, hired on contractual basis are now being given training and they will start driving buses soon.

"With the new recruitment, passengers will no longer have to spend long time on roads for a bus. These drivers have been hired on contractual basis," the official said.

He also said that the decision to hire drivers has been taken following the acute staff shortage.

"As many as 130 drivers and conductors are retiring every month. The recruitment process through DSSB takes more time to hire drivers and conductors due to which these new drivers have been hired on contractual basis," the official added.
