31 crib deaths reported from BMCH in 6 days

As many as 31 infants have died in the Burdwan Medical College Hospital (BMCH) here in the past six days, a BMCH official said today.

The 31 children, who died in the BMCH, were in the age group of one-day old to nine-year old, and were admitted to the hospital with high fever, malnourishment, under weight and with infection, the official said.

On October 31, five infants died at the facility, while on November 1 there were six deaths, November 2 five, November 3 seven, November 4 six and today till 1 pm two deaths were reported, the official said.
 

BMCH Superintendent Utpal Daan said the average infant mortality rate in the hospital is four.

Daan claimed the hospital has a shortage of doctors, nurses and staff and most the infants admitted here are referred from different district hospitals in serious condition.

At the time most of the children are admitted here they are already in serious condition suffering from high fever, malnourishment, under weight and with infection, the Super claimed.
