A 31-year old sales professional who was detained after a quarrel with a woman constable allegedly died in police custody here today, triggering protests by his family members.

Doctors at the Tuticorin Medical College Hospital said A Pandiarajan was brought dead by police personnel.

According to his family, Pandiarajan was stopped by a woman constable here last evening when he was riding a vehicle and a wordy duel broke out between them. He was later taken to the South Police station here.

Two policemen visited his house and collected his routine medicine from his wife around midnight yesterday, they claimed.

This morning police informed his wife that her husband has died.

Alleging that an Inspector and Sub-Inspector of the station were responsible for his death, Pandiarajan's relatives refused to receive the body and demanded the arrest of the two police personnel.

Police assured that action would be taken against the police personnel if they were found guilty and were trying to pacify the family members.
