32 arrested for drinking liquor in public places in Delhi

Thirty two people have been arrested by the Excise department of Delhi government for drinking liquor in public places in the National Capital.

"The department has arrested 32 people for consuming liquor in public places in last two days. Although 15 were arrested on November 16, 17 people were held on November 17," a senior government official, said today.

While launching the drive against open drinking of liquor in public places on November seven, the Delhi government had said that it has decided to strictly enforce the Excise Act strictly under which consuming alcohol at public places attracts a fine of Rs 5,000, which can even go up to Rs 10,000, with a jail term of three months if the offender creates nuisance
 

On the first day of the drive, Excise department had arrested 36 people for consuming liquor in public places while on second day, 41 were arrested. On the third day, 45 people were arrested.

A senior government official claimed that the drive has been affected since the announcement of demonetisation as the city police has diverted a part of its work force towards banks and ATMs to manage crowd.

The official also said that there has also been a dip in liquor sales in the city after demonetisation of high bank notes as people are facing cash crunch.
