347 kg poppy straw seized in Siliguri, 1 arrested

Around 347 kilogrammes of poppy straw stuffed inside gunny bags were seized from a tractor in Siliguri, a senior official of the Narcotics Control Bureau said today.

Late last night, a joint team of NCB zonal unit and Sashastra Seema Bal officers intercepted a tractor near Ghosh Pukur toll plaza of NH-34, Panitanki at Siliguri in Darjeeling district, he said.

The tractor was loaded with gunny bags containing poppy straw, which has a market value of Rs 20 lakh, he said.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested, he said.

Initial investigation revealed that the driver, who hailed from Bihar's Kishanganj, was taking the drugs to Nepal from Malda, the officer said.
