Nearly three dozen people were rescued after being stranded on a riverine island in western Nepal near the Indian border following incessant rainfall in the past three days.

Some 35 people including children, who went to excavate sand and collect pebbles, were trapped after water level in the Mahakali river suddenly rose.

Armed Police Force and Nepal Army jointly carried out a rescue operation with the help of boats, according to security sources.
