A 35-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband in Rohtak on Friday over marital discord, police said.

"The woman was going on a scooter when the accused, who is her husband, opened fire at her," said Rajender, the Sub-Inspector at Shivaji Colony police station.

"There was marital discord between the couple, preliminary investigations have revealed," he said.

A case was registered against the accused, he said, adding that efforts were underway to nab him.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said he was shocked over the killing of the woman in broad daylight.

Referring to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, his ministerial colleagues and some other senior BJP leaders being present in Rohtak on Friday in connection with a party function, Surjewala said, "When the entire government machinery is present in a city and despite that law and order is not maintained in such a place, where else can one expect safety and security then?" the Congress leader asked.
