36 booked for stealing I-T refund cheques worth Rs 66.46 lakhs

As many as 38 people have been booked for allegedly stealing and encashing Income Tax refund cheques worth Rs 66,46,510 between a span of four years, police said here today.

These people stole refund cheques which were in the custody of Income Tax Officer (ITO) S Khandate between April 2010 and June 2014 and forged signature of the said ITO and deposited it in their respective bank accounts.

Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Hemant Wandhare lodged a complaint with Sadar Police yesterday and offences under section 380, 420,465,467,468,471 and 120B of the IPC have been registaered against the accused 38 people, police said in a release today.
 

However no arrests were made so far, it added.
