The Women and Child Development Ministry has received 36 complaints of irregularities or improper implementation of the anganwadi scheme between 2016 and 2018, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday.

The ministry received 21 complaints in 2016, which was the highest in these three years, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said in a written reply to a question in the Lower House.

She said the complaints, as and when received, are forwarded to states and Union Territories concerned for suitable action as it is they who implement the Anganwadi Services scheme.

According to the data provided by the minister, these 36 complaints were received from 11 states, including Uttar Pradesh which had the highest number of complaints.

Anganwadi Services scheme provides six child development related services -- supplementary nutrition, pre-school education, health and nutrition education, immunization, health check-up and referral services.

"The services are provided at the Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) through Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) and Anganwadi Helpers (AWHs) to more than 8.75 crore beneficiaries," Irani said.
