376 arrested, 817 weapons deposited in J-K: police

Over 370 people have been detained and around 800 licensed weapons deposited with the police in the state on the directives of the Election Commission ahead of six phase Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

"As many as 376 persons have been rounded up under the preventive sections of CrPC in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with Lok Sabha elections," Special Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra said.

Rajendra, who was briefing the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Umang Narula at a high level security review meeting with regard to parliamentary elections, also said "so far, 817 licensed weapons, owned by civilians, have also been deposited."
 

Special DGP said that 957 non-bailable warrants have been executed and "171 hamlets have been identified as 'vulnerable' and 143 persons unidentified as probable source of trouble".

Jammu and Kashmir, with six Lok Sabha seats, will witness polling on five days on April 10, 17, 24, 30 and May 7. Jammu will go to polls on April 10.

To ensure free and fair Lok Sabha elections in the state, 330 companies of Central Armed Police forces will be deployed exclusively for the security of the polling stations.

"As many as 330 companies of central security police force will be deployed for the exclusively for the poll duty to ensure free and fair elections in J&K," the senior police officer said.

Apart from this, 50 per cent of police force, armed police, Indian Reserve Police (IRP) would be deployed for security of rallies, candidates, sanitisation operations, area dominations and guarding vulnerable areas to ensure incident free and fair polls, he said.

Narula had yesterday chaired a review meeting in his office to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections.

In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, 1,039 companies of para military forces were deployed.
