As many as 4,90,181 fake ration cards were identified and cancelled and new cards are being issued within 60 days, Tamil Nadu government said today.
"New ration cards are being issued within 60 days (from the date of application) according to the order of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and 4,90,181 bogus family cards were identified and cancelled," a government release said.
The data was presented at a review meeting chaired by Food Minister R Kamaraj today where he directed officials to speed up work to issue smart PDS cards.

Also, 16,50,147 new family cards have been issued during the period under review and 20,381 more new cards are ready for distribution, the release said.
Out of the 5,33,765 petitions received in civil supplies grievance redress meetings, action was taken on 5,33,414 such petitions, the government said adding in the past five years 894 persons were arrested under detention laws for smuggling food commodities.
