An alleged drug peddler today escaped from police custody within hours of his arrest in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir following which four policemen were suspended, an official said.

A probe has also been ordered in this regard, he said.

Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in drug peddling from Bari Brahmana area of the district yesterday and booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a senior police officer said.

He said both the arrested persons were lodged at the local police station for questioning but one of them, Sahil, gave a slip to the policemen on the pretext of attending the call of nature this morning.

"Four policemen including an officer were placed under suspension for dereliction of duty and an inquiry has been ordered," the officer said.

A man hunt has also been launched to arrested the accused, he said.
