At least four persons were killed in a landslide that hit certain villages along the National Highway-44 in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district early today, police said.

A large number of vehicles were also stranded due to the incident that took place at around 4.30 AM at Tongseng and Rattacherra villages bordering Assam.

Four passengers of a vehicle travelling through Rattacherra died in the landslide, the police said.

The landslide was the result of incessant rain for the past 48 hours in the district.

A police team was sent to the spot but no details were available till now because of poor connectivity of the area due to the bad weather.

Police said that the NH-44 has been closed for vehicular movement following the incident.
