Prosecutors in northern Mexico say four men have been killed in a gun battle with police and military personnel in the Gulf of California resort of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point.

The attorney general of the border state of Sonora says the shootout occurred near a luxury hotel in Puerto Penasco early yesterday.

Attorney General Carlos Navarro Sugich said two of the men died when they crashed their vehicle trying to flee authorities during the confrontation.

Navarro Sugich said another man was seriously wounded in the gunbattle.

Puerto Penasco is popular with visitors from Arizona, just across the border.

The US Consulate in Nogales, Sonora advised US citizens in Puerto Penasco to shelter in place. Shootouts are very rare at Mexican beach resorts.
