4 die in landslip, 2 injured

Four persons, including three women died while two others were injured in a landslip along the NH 44 in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district today, police said.

"As per information received, four passengers of a vehicle travelling through Ratacherra have died in the landslip," in- charge at the Khliehriat Police station, B Lyngkhoi told PTI.

He said that six persons in the vehicle halted on the side of road and were sipping tea at a tea stall located behind a hill when the landslip took place at around 4.30 pm at Rattacherra village.

The deceased have been identified as Everyone Najiar (61), D Pohshna (45), P Pohshna (23) and D Amse (45).
 

The two injured - identified as Ram Gupta, father of P Pohshna, who died in the incident and S Lyngdoh - were rescued and taken to a hospital by the BSF, he said.

At least four houses in the area were also washed away in the incident when the landmass caved due to incessant rain in the past 48 hours, he said.

After the incident, several hundred vehicles are stranded along the NH 44 as portion of the road was cut off.
