Four persons were today arrested for their alleged involvement in beating up a youth for protesting of firecrackers being aimed at him and some of his associates in the Phoolbagan area, the police said.
Santanu Prasad (23), Somnath Maity (24), Ajay Mallick (21) and Somnath Bera (20), all residents of Phoolbagan area were arrested this evening for their alleged involvement in beating up Subhajit Ghorai and his friends, including his sister Suchandra Ghorai.
Ghorai and his friends had protested after firecrackers were thrown at them from a vehicle boarded by the accused four and others during a Kali Puja immersion, the police said.

"The incident happened at around 8.45 PM yesterday when Subhajit Ghorai, a second year commerce student of Vidyasagar College, along with friends Akash Dutta, Dishani Dey and sister Suchandra Ghorai was coming out of a multiplex after watching a movie," a police officer said.
At that time a number of boys, who were travelling in a mini truck, threw fireworks on the road and one of the fire crackers landed in front of the four persons.
"Annoyed, the complainant (Subhajit) chased the vehicle and intercepted it at N M Road and E M Bypass crossing and demanded an explanation from them for their behaviour, following which a spat broke out between them.
"In the meantime, around five youths from the vehicle got down and allegedly hit the complainant with bamboo sticks before fleeing the place," he said.
Police traced the vehicle with the registration number today and arrested the four accused, he added.
