Police have cracked a Rs one crore jewellery heist case reported on a BEST bus here last month with the arrest of a suspected kingpin and his three accomplices, a senior officer said today.

Police arrested Sudheer Raibhan (38), Yusuf Sheikh, Abdul Jabbar and Qayyum Qureshi from near Deonar bus stand yesterday and recovered Rs 84 lakh of looted jewellery from them, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni said.

The incident occurred on January 27 when a staffer of a diamond jewellery store was robbed off his bag containing cash and valuables while travelling on bus route number 517 bus, between Deonar and Chirag Nagar, he said.

According to the complaint filed at Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station in suburban Kurla, the bag contained cash worth Rs 2.3 lakh and diamond-studded jewellery worth Rs 96,07,380, collectively amounting to around Rs 1 crore.

Kulkarni said the gang usually used to operate on the route and target people between 9:30 AM and 12 noon.

"The gang is suspected to be involved in offences like robbery, extortion and murder," the officer said.

A crime branch team (unit VI) was formed in the wake of the incident to trace the accused.

All the accused were booked under relevant sections of IPC, he said.
