Four persons were today arrested for allegedly organising the banned cock fight at a village in the district.

Acting on a tip off, police raided Mavilathoppu village near Keezhakarai and arrested the four men for organising the cock fight.

They seized two cocks and alleged gamble money.

A case had been registered under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, police said.

Madras High Court has last year held courts cannot direct the police to permit cockfights because a fight between birds and animals was prohibited under the Act.

Dismissing a petition of a villager for a directive to police to permit a cockfight, generally conducted during festival seasons, the court had said "cockfight was on the list of acts prohibited under Section 11(1)(n) of the PCA Act and, therefore, the court should not entertain petitions for permission to organise such events.
