Four newborn babies died at a government hospital here in the last 24 hours, triggering protests by their parents who alleged negligence by the hospital authorities.

However, authorities in Doon Women Hospital denied the allegations and said that it was just a coincidence and three infants were born prematurely.

Tripti Bahuguna, Chief Medical officer(CMO) and in-charge of the hospital, described the deaths as "just a coincidence" and said that there was no negligence on part of the hospital.

"Four newborn babies died since last evening. However, three of them were born prematurely and they were underweight," the CMO said.

Doctors tried best to save them but of no avail, she said.

"The fourth child was brought dead to the hospital," Bahuguna said, adding that the child choked to death while being fed milk.

However, parents of the babies held protests at the hospital for hours demanding action against the hospital.
