4 women killed in lightning strike

Four women were killed today and two other injured after being struck by lightning in Bihar's East Champaran district, a police officer said.

Scores of women were working in a paddy field at Ruhania village when the lightning struck, in-charge of Banjaria police station, under which the village falls, Ravishankar Singh said.

While four of them - identified as Rupkali (18), Sawari Devi (40), Sursati Devi (40) and Mita Kumari (18) - died on the spot, two others Ramawati Devi and her daughter Durga Kumari, received burn injuries, he said.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the injured woman and her daughter taken to Sadar hospital, the police officer added.
