A 25-year-old man, whose wife killed herself due to his extra-marital affair, has been sent to four years in jail, with a court here saying he was mature enough to understand the consequences of his act.

Additional Sessions Judge Manoj Jain also said that the man's relentless involvement with his paramour was enough to drive his wife to commit suicide.

The court, which also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on him, noted that Wasim, a resident of Nithari village on Delhi-UP border, was rather interested in marrying his lover, but his parents did not approve of it, so he could not take the relationship further.

"He(convict) was mature and sensible enough to understand the consequences of his action. Either he should have mustered courage and should have shown guts to marry the other girl against the wishes of his parents or he should have terminated such an affair altogether," the court said.

"His relentless involvement with his paramour was enough to drive his wife to commit suicide. In her last words (suicide note) also she categorically claimed that she was feeling cheated and betrayed," it said.

According to the complaint filed by the woman's brother, Wasim had a relation outside marriage and was even interested in marrying the other woman but could not do so as his family was against it.

The prosecution relied on the suicide note written by the woman which said she felt cheated by her husband, therefore, took such a drastic step.

Wasim outrightly denied that he was involved in any extra-marital affair and maintained that there was never any demand or any cruelty.

He claimed that he had no knowledge as to why his wife had committed suicide.
