In yet other incident of its kind, more than 40 juvenile offenders escaped from an observation home in Mukherjee Nagar area in North-West Delhi after creating ruckus in the facility here this afternoon.

The incident took place at around 2 PM when authorities were shifting two juvenile offenders to another juvenile justice home at Majnu Ka Tila.

"One of them, who is accused of serious crime including murder, was resisting the shift. In a desperate bid, he hit his head against the wall and started to shout that he was being beaten by the rival group of juveniles. This instigated the other inmates who went on a rampage and clashed among each other," said a remand home official.

Amid violence and stone-pelting, more than 40 juveniles managed to escape. Private guards and other security personnel could not prevent them.

Learning about the incident, a police team reached the spot but they could not enter the remand home as under the Juvenile Justice Act, policemen are barred from entering the facilites.

The shelter houses nearly 180 juvenile delinquents. The home is run under the supervision of a Metropolitan Magistrate.

Although a police complaint has not been made in connection with the incident by the remand home authorities, two to three juveniles have been brought back into the facility. However, around 40 of them are still untraceable, police said.

There has been a series of incidents of arson and clashes among juvenile offenders in remand homes in the national capital in the last couple of months. Many of them who had escaped during the previous incidents are still at large.
