A 42-year-old pushcart vendor was killed after a speeding car hit him on a road in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident happened on Tuesday night on Chauri Road under City Kotwali police station area, they said.

Bechu Gupta was returning home with his pushcart when the speeding car, apparently driven by a drunk youth, hit him near Badi Bagh area, police added.

While Gupta died on the spot, the inebriated man also suffered serious injuries and was referred to the trauma centre in Varanasi, police informed.

Infuriated over the accident, locals staged a protest refusing to allow the man's body to be removed from the road.

They were pacified by senior officials and later the body was sent for a post mortem, police said.
