The annual breeding season ban on fishing in sea off the union territory has been reduced to 47 days this year from 61 days following representations and fishermen would be able to resume their work from midnight of May 31.

The Puducherry government had initially imposed the ban for 61 days from April 15 but modified it to 47 days following representation from fishermen outfits, official sources said.

They said the government had given a cash relief of Rs 4,000 to each of the 20,400 fishermen families in the union territory as a compensation for loss of revenue to them during the ban period.

In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, the 45-day ban on fishing imposed since April 15 comes to an end tonight.
