47 shopkeepers prosecuted for using unverified weighing scales

The Department of Weights and Measures prosecuted 47 shopkeepers in the last one month for using unverified weighing scales.

The shopkeepers were prosecuted under Section 24(1) of the Legal Metrological Act, 2009, for using unverified weighing scales.

In the last financial year, 318 shopkeepers were prosecuted under the Act for using unverified weighing scales, said Food Supply and Weights and Measures commissioner S S Yadav.

He said that as per Section 24 of Legal Metrology Act, 2009, every person having weight or measure in his possession, custody or control, which is intended or is likely to be used by him in any transaction or for protection, shall, before putting such weight or measure into such use, have such weight or measure verified by the department.
 

As per rule 24 of Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010, every such person is required to exhibit the verification certificate in a conspicuous place in the premises where the weight or measure is required to be used.
