Around 48 CITU workers were arrested today for staging a demonstration and violating prohibitory orders on Mall road here this evening, police said.

Agitated over the death of two striking workers of JP Hydropower Company during past two days, the CITU workers courted arrest at Mall road to express their solidarity with agitating workers of the company that is managing the Karchham-Wangto and Baspa hydropower projects in tribal Kinnaur district, they said.

The CITU blamed the company for the death of two workers and also accused the government of being "hand in glove" with the company.

The workers had been demanding regularisation, enhancement in salary and implementation of labour laws and agitating for past three months.

Efforts of the company and the district administration to end the deadlock and persuade the workers to return to work had failed to yield result.

The company management had blamed the CITU for instigating the workers and inciting violence and sought protection from the government.

Both the CITU and company officials have filed FIRs against each other blaming them for inciting violence and vitiating the atmosphere.
