As many as 48 employees of a private food processing company today became ill, with the condition of four being serious, after they were administered anti-cholera vaccine at a health camp organised by the firm, officials of a hospital said.

The food processing company is located at Varsola village in Kheda district on Ahmedabad-Nadiad Highway.

"Four persons with serious condition were referred to Ahmedabad civil hospital, while the remaining 44 are undergoing treatment at Nadiad civil hospital," an official said.

Patients told the doctors that they had been given anti-cholera vaccines at the health camp.

Like every year, the company had organised the health camp where its employees are administered vaccines and provided other health check-ups, said Manish Jadawala, a civil surgeon at Nadiad civil hospital.

"Immediately after the vaccination, 48 persons complained of nausea and started vomiting, and were taken to the civil hospital," he said.

"They were provided initial treatment at the hospital. However, condition of four of them worsened and we referred them to Ahmedabad civil hospital," Jadawala said.

The others are being treated at Nadiad hospital where their condition is stable, he said.
