Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, a former State Youth Congress President and ex-MLA, was today appointed President of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC).

Sukhu (48), who has been officiating as the president of the HPCC since January after senior leader Virbhadra Singh (78) quit the post to assume Chief Ministership, has now been appointed as HPCC chief, AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said here. A two-time MLA, Sukhu had also been state NSUI and Youth Congress president.

Today's announcement by Dwivedi, a day after a new PCC chief for Bihar was appointed, appears to have set in motion the much-awaited PCC reshuffle pending in a number of states.

"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed Sukhu as the President of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect," Dwivedi said in a press release.

Both the new PCC chiefs are relatively young and have served in the Youth Congress in the past. Ashok Chaudhary, who was appointed Bihar PCC chief, is 43 years old.

Their appointment is in line with the party's renewed focus on youths and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's long-term plans for strengthening the party organisation in the states.

The new PCC heads were appointed after Rahul's recent interaction with party leaders from the AICC to block levels in a number of states.
