Cracking down on stunt bikers and traffic violators in the high-security New Delhi area, police today impounded 269 vehicles, detained 250 bikers and fined 482 motorists.

"We have detained around 250 riders including juveniles. However, they were allowed to go following counselling and after their parents were called," said a senior police official.

As most of them gave the excuse of visiting religious places in the area, priests from Hanuman Mandir and Granthi's from the nearby Gurudwara were called in to make them understand that they don't need to break laws to be religious, police said.

The special traffic drive which started in the midnight continued till early this morning during which around 900 two-wheelers were checked and 213 were issued challans on the spot while others were challaned later. 269 vehicles were also impounded in the drive.

According to the police, pickets were put up at 52 points on the roads around India Gate.

A police official said that the drive was launched to stop bikers from breaking rules, honking and performing stunts risking their lives and that of others.

In a similar drive on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, nine bikers were challaned and four motorcycles were impounded. A total of 288 vehicles including 36 cabs and 237 bikes were checked.

Police swung into action after around 40 rowdy bikers created ruckus on Tilak Marg, Hanuman Road and Akbar Road.

In July last year, a 19-year-old boy was killed and his friend was wounded when police opened fire on a group of bikers performing dangerous stunts in the New Delhi district. The incident had caused uproar with the victim's family demanding a stern action against the policeman who had opened fire.
