49.9 per cent voting in the Tirupati assembly bypoll

The Tirupati Asssembly constitutency in Andhra Pradesh saw a voter turnout of 49.9 per cent in the bypolls held today.

No untoward incidents were reported during the polls, RDO and Returning officer Veerabrahmam said.

The bypoll was necessiated due to the death of TDP's M Venkataramana.

The main contest was between Venkataramana's widow M Suguna and Congress nominee R Sridevi.

The opposition YSR Congress did not field its candidate. However, the Congress and several other Independents entered the fray, making the election inevitable.

The voting percentage was 59.51 in the election held in May last, he said.
