The city has earned a "unique negative distinction with total of 5,093 drunk drivers sentenced to jail term in 259 days of this year", Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.

"What started as the first ever jail term in Delhi in August 2010 for drunken driving has reached bigger dimensions where so many people have suffered jail terms for the offence.

"A large number of them have got imprisonments for even terms as long as 15 days and beyond. What we expect from people is that people should not drink and drive," Garg said.

He said stringent action against drunken driving is bringing accidents and deaths on road down for the third continuous year.
